The Heaven Project

The Bible has a lot to say about Heaven (our future home), though we often ignore this in favor of answers for this present world.  In the Heaven Project we want to look at the Who (Angels, Living Creatures, Saints gone ahead, and who among us will go) Where (The Heaven of Heavens, The Third Heaven, and The New Jerusalem) When (Death and the Rapture) Why (The need for Heaven) What (What else will we see there? What will we do there?) How (How do we know we have a secured future in Heaven).

The Heaven Project like the other topics on this site is an ongoing study with many updates being added.  Please continue to come back and see new updates.  Lets explore what the Bible has to say about our future home.

Heaven of heavens:

Deuteronomy 10:14 "Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens is the Lord's thy God, the earth also, with all that therein is." (KJV)

Third Heaven:

2 Corinthians 12:2-4 "I know a person in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know; God knows. 3 And I know that such a person—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know; God knows— 4 was caught up into Paradise and heard things that are not to be told, that no mortal is permitted to repeat." (NRSV)

Angels:

  1. Seraphim - meaning "fiery ones" (see: Isaiah 6:1-4)
  2. Cherubim - meaning "likely an order of angelic beings"  (see: Ezekiel 10:14)
  3. Archangel - meaning "chief angel" (see: 1 Thessalonians 4:16) "For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:"
Four Living Creatures (Book of Ezekiel):

In appearance their form was human, but each of them had four faces and four wings. Their legs were straight; their feet were like those of a calf and gleamed like burnished bronze.  Under their wings on their four sides they had human hands. All four of them had faces and wings, and the wings of one touched the wings of another. Each one went straight ahead; they did not turn as they moved.

Their faces looked like this: Each of the four had the face of a human being, and on the right side each had the face of a lion, and on the left the face of an ox; each also had the face of an eagle. Such were their faces. They each had two wings spreading out upward, each wing touching that of the creature on either side; and each had two other wings covering its body. Each one went straight ahead. Wherever the spirit would go, they would go, without turning as they went. The appearance of the living creatures was like burning coals of fire or like torches. Fire moved back and forth among the creatures; it was bright, and lightning flashed out of it. The creatures sped back and forth like flashes of lightning.

As I looked at the living creatures, I saw a wheel on the ground beside each creature with its four faces. This was the appearance and structure of the wheels: They sparkled like topaz, and all four looked alike. Each appeared to be made like a wheel intersecting a wheel. As they moved, they would go in any one of the four directions the creatures faced; the wheels did not change direction as the creatures went. Their rims were high and awesome, and all four rims were full of eyes all around.

When the living creatures moved, the wheels beside them moved; and when the living creatures rose from the ground, the wheels also rose. Wherever the spirit would go, they would go, and the wheels would rise along with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels. When the creatures moved, they also moved; when the creatures stood still, they also stood still; and when the creatures rose from the ground, the wheels rose along with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.

Spread out above the heads of the living creatures was what looked something like a vault, sparkling like crystal, and awesome. Under the vault their wings were stretched out one toward the other, and each had two wings covering its body. When the creatures moved, I heard the sound of their wings, like the roar of rushing waters, like the voice of the Almighty (Shaddai), like the tumult of an army. When they stood still, they lowered their wings.

Then there came a voice from above the vault over their heads as they stood with lowered wings. Above the vault over their heads was what looked like a throne of lapis lazuli, and high above on the throne was a figure like that of a man. I saw that from what appeared to be his waist up he looked like glowing metal, as if full of fire, and that from there down he looked like fire; and brilliant light surrounded him. Like the appearance of a rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the radiance around him.

This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord. When I saw it, I fell facedown, and I heard the voice of one speaking. (see: Ezekiel 1:5b-28 NIV)

Four Living Creatures (Book of Revelation):
  1. With Lion
  2. Ox
  3. Man
  4. Flying Eagle
Each living creature had six wings and were covered in eyes, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying: “‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,’ who was, and is, and is to come.” (see: Revelation 4:6-8 NIV)

Sexual

This section is currently under construction as we find scripture related to it.  Please feel free to join us as we discover what the Bible has to say about sex.

I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a young woman." - Job 31:1 (NIV)

27You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart." - Matthew 5:27-28 (NIV)

9 "Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God."  - 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 (NIV)

Obedience

“Has the Lord as much delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of the Lord?  Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed than the fat of rams." 1 Samuel 15:22

Obeying Christ is a tall order that can only be done through a continued relationship with Him, in service to His people.

In Matthew 7:21-23 it tells us: “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.  Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many [a] miracles?’  And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’

In Matthew 7 we see a few things that stand out:

1. The first is the use of "Lord, Lord".  Although we may call Him Lord it does not guarantee entrance to the kingdom of heaven.

2. The second thing that stands out is that though we may be active in His name, it too does not guarantee entrance into the kingdom of heaven.

3. The third and most important thing is we realize that only by doing the will of our Father in heaven do we get to both know Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

The story of the rich young ruler is one that fascinates me as this is about a young man who has an immense amount of wealth.  The story does not tell us how he had such wealth, weather by inheritance or by labor, but we do know that he had a lot of wealth and a hard time parting with it.

In Matthew 19:16-26 it says:

"And someone came to Him and said, “Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may obtain eternal life?”And He said to him, “Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.”  Then he *said to Him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “You shall not commit murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness;  Honor your father and mother; and You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”  The young man *said to Him, “All these things I have kept; what am I still lacking?”  Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be [b]complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”  But when the young man heard this statement, he went away grieving; for he was one who owned much property.

And Jesus said to His disciples, “Truly I say to you, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.  Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”  When the disciples heard this, they were very astonished and said, “Then who can be saved?”  And looking at them Jesus said to them, “With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

Provider

Among us as believers we have some misconceptions of who is the provider and what the role entails.  Often times we hear that the husband is the provider.  We also hear that God is our provider.  Which brings us to our next big misconception, what does God provide?  What is a need?

Husband as provider:

Whether in premarital counseling, or men's retreats we are habitually told that men are the providers.  Recently I did a Bible study to dig in and see if in fact that is true.

The first verse that caught my eye was 1 Timothy 5:8 which speaks of providing for relatives.  The thing that stands out is that the verse is directed to "Anyone".

"Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever." 1 Timothy 5:8

A passage of the Bible that is often associated by us as Christians as we often claim that man is the provider is Genisis 3: 17-19.  As part of the curse Adam is told, "...By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food".  While this scripture tells of laboring, it does not speak of providing.

To Adam He said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’ “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life.  It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field.  By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.” Genisis 3: 17-19

For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.” II Thessalonians 3:10

God as Provider:

Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah: “Leave here, turn eastward and hide in the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan. You will drink from the brook, and I have directed the ravens to supply you with food there.” 1 Kings 17: 2-4

“But so that we may not cause offense, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours.” Matthew 17: 27
