Well having a personal relationship is commendable and commanded by our Lord and Savior, it has been misinterpreted by us by our own narrow interpretation.
God is careful to describe religion in keeping with it's purest form in James 1: 27 it reads; "Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world."
