Provider

{[['']]}
Among us as believers we have some misconceptions of who is the provider and what the role entails.  Often times we hear that the husband is the provider.  We also hear that God is our provider.  Which brings us to our next big misconception, what does God provide?  What is a need?

Husband as provider:

Whether in premarital counseling, or men's retreats we are habitually told that men are the providers.  Recently I did a Bible study to dig in and see if in fact that is true.

The first verse that caught my eye was 1 Timothy 5:8 which speaks of providing for relatives.  The thing that stands out is that the verse is directed to "Anyone".

"Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever." 1 Timothy 5:8

A passage of the Bible that is often associated by us as Christians as we often claim that man is the provider is Genisis 3: 17-19.  As part of the curse Adam is told, "...By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food".  While this scripture tells of laboring, it does not speak of providing.

To Adam He said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’ “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life.  It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field.  By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.” Genisis 3: 17-19

For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.” II Thessalonians 3:10

God as Provider:

Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah: “Leave here, turn eastward and hide in the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan. You will drink from the brook, and I have directed the ravens to supply you with food there.” 1 Kings 17: 2-4

“But so that we may not cause offense, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours.” Matthew 17: 27
